Zigzag Iris is an excellent plant for partially shaded rock gardens, perennial borders, or woodland gardens. For this disocactus, go with either orchid or cactus-specific soil, which will be purposefully porous for the best aeration and drainage. These plants will appreciate an appropriate potting soil mix just as much as your other houseplants. ![]() Unglazed clay is ideal because it lets excess moisture evaporate. Commonly found growing in swamps and wet meadows of central North America, this small rhizomatous perennial performs well in regular garden soil too. Being classified as epiphytic means the zig zag cactus can grow without soil, but that doesn't mean it has to. The Euphorbia tithymaloides, or the Zigzag Plant as it can be more commonly known, is a unique evergreen with red slipper floral leaves (not flowers). Use a container at least 12 inches in diameter with large drainage holes. Smaller than the sepals, the petals are spreading perpendicularly to slightly ascending. Easier and quicker ways to clone and propagate your zig zag fishbone cactus is to take leaf cuttings and root them in water or in soil. Each flower features widely spreading and arching sepals with a yellow patch toward their base. Try moving your fishbone cactus closer to the window. If you notice that all of the stems are staying thin and round, this may be an indication that your plant is not receiving enough light. A low Iris that is native to wet areas, mesic woods, and along streambanks, but will grow well in regular garden soil. They are often hidden, as the stems are shorter than the leaves. The stems of a healthy fishbone cactus should be flat with wide zig-zagging edges. In early to mid-spring, blue-purple to pale blue-violet flowers bloom among the leaves. Considered quite hardy, Iris brevicaulis (Zigzag Iris) is a low-growing perennial with zig-zag stems bearing long, lax and arching, glossy bright green leaves, 10-20 in. ![]()
